Forbes on Facebook

January 22nd, 2009

chris-forbes.jpg Through my network on Facebook I have come to know a range of very talented people from around the world.  And one of them is Chris Forbes, marketing extraordinaire and author of the popular e-book, ‘Facebook for Pastors.’ Recently I had the chance to interview Chris about Facebook, marketing and other web projects of note for Christian leaders..  Here is the Forbes interview.

BB/ You founded Ministry Marketing Coach, what is its aim and purpose?

CF/ The mission of Ministry Marketing Coach  is to help Christian ministries of all kinds use marketing to get the gospel message outside the walls of the church and to the unchurched people of the mainstream marketplace. Helping them reach more people than ever.  It’s great fun helping ministries with their marketing and we offer design services. Also I get opportunities to speak and write on the subjects of ministry marketing, faith-based nonprofit marketing, social marketing, and Guerrilla Marketing for nonprofits.

BB/ What keeps you involved and engaged in Facebook?

CF/ It’s like a huge ministry conference that is going on 24/7. Plus I keep up with friends and family. I have already had two High School reunions because of FB. Even a new client or two as well.

BB/ Your group, ‘Facebook for Pastors’ has some 4300+ members, how is it used?

CF/ I take a laissez faire approach (ooh that’s French!) with the group. I prefer it to be a place that pastors network with one another on their own terms. I don’t do much editing of the group. There are a lot of great folks in the group and that is what makes it fun. I send a newsletter about once a month. The topics of the newsletter are meant to help people get the most out of Facebook (and other social media sometimes) for ministry.

Also I want to raise awareness of my friend Ken Surritte’s ministry http://www.heartsandhandsinternational.org/ Here’s a news article with the latest they have been doing: click here. He is helping a lot of children at risk and I am very proud of what he is doing. Check it out!

BB/ What inspired you to write the e-book, ‘Facebook for Pastors‘? Continue reading »

Conversations from the cutting edge

February 17th, 2008

ism.JPGOver the course of the day I have been attending the Metaverse U Conference in Second Life. In my previous blog post I stated that the key negative of virtual conferences is not being able to network; well I have to somewhat eat my words as I met a couple of very interesting people through the event. Katherine W. Prawl is a founder of one of the most amazing educational experiences in Second Life: the International Space Museum. It has received a huge amount of attention and deservedly so.. it is stunning.

She has also been around Second Life since 2005, and had some great things to share about the emerging new virtual technology. And then through Katherine I met Piet Hut, who is a Professor at the the Institute of Advanced Study. I started by asking Katherine why people would invest their time in Second Life..

Ministry leader burnout: the Anne Jackson interview

January 10th, 2008

I remember the shock I felt when I heard my old pastor had cheated on his wife. A number of years later I asked him why he had done it, he shared that he had been struggling for years under a weight of expectations about his performance as a pastor, and that his affair was a form of escape. And this is not an isolated case. In this post I interview Anne Jackson who is currently writing a book, Mad Church Disease about what she calls the burnout epidemic in the western church. Interesting people interviews: Helen Thompson

October 12th, 2007

From time to time I will interview interesting people. helen-thompson.jpgThe first is Helen Thompson, a social media guru with some fabulous things to say.

MB: Tell us a little about yourself.

HT: I’m a cradle Episcopalian in the Diocese of Virginia, living in the northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in the U.S. I had a break with faith in my teens that lasted until I was 32, and I’ll talk more about that in a moment. But first, a little more about the rest of me–professionally, I am a writer, on one shoe, and a social media strategist, on the other. Continue reading »
