An amazing virtual service!

March 23rd, 2008

The Easter Sunday Service at the Anglican Cathedral of Second Life was amazing! We had the largest congregation ever, as people from around the world came together to celebrate the risen Christ.

I preached on : ‘The Fourth Day: God’s Plan For You.’ To listen to this message click the play button below (around 10 mins in length).

Also I have made a video of highlights from the service which can be viewed below (around 6 minutes in length.)

The video is also available on Youtube by clicking here.

Sorry I missed this - but spent too much time in my 1st life church to manage!
A Blessed Easter to you, Mark.

Technically, this new advance in virtual communication is breathtaking. But I’m afraid that, communication becoming more and more virtual, we’ll lose the physical contact to real people. After all, we’re made of flesh, not silicium !

Thanks for your comment Marc. May I refer you to a paper I recently wrote called, ‘Christian Mission to a Virtual World’ see: http://brownblog.info/?p=381 In it I state,

“Noted Australian social commentator,Hugh Mackay recently stated, ‘the idea that human presence is necessary for people to
communicate with each other has gone.’ Hundreds of millions of people connect every day
through the internet without physically meeting. And in many of these encounters they may never
meet in the flesh. This has implications for the church where the standard approach has mostly
involved face to face encounters within a local context. But with the shift towards community
emerging out of networks, the rise of the internet, and the resulting comfort with non physical
community, the time has come to consider mission within the virtual setting. The report, The Mission Shaped Church expresses the broad challenge well,

‘There is a fabric of the old way of being society and being church. We are not about patching
the fabric of that old garment but seeking to set up a new loom to weave the new fabric for
    tomorrow’s society of the kingdom.’

Our calling as the church is, ‘to embody and inculcate the gospel in the evolving contexts and cultures of our society.’ We seek to be incarnational, ‘to be people where they are, how they are. ’

As the World Council of Churches stated in 1968,

‘A changing culture constitutes a call from God. Many people today live in a variety of worlds
such as family, job, leisure, politics and education. These worlds represent different social
    structures.’

Though much has changed since 1968 this ‘call from
    God’ still exists.”

Marc behind every virtual representation is a real person. So actually contact with real people does occur, it is just different to what we are used to. The last thing to state is that the intention of this new approach to church isn’t to replace the physical church, but complement it; we seek to be where people are, and in this case that is the internet.

I invite you to come and visit one of our services some time.

Thank you Reverend. In fact, I do attend Anglican services on SL from time to time (my name on SL is Boson Gibbs) and find them very instructive. You do a good job, as do the persons/avatars responsible for the parish activities on SL.My remark was not directed against the Anglican church on SL.

Ahh Boson!! I see. You were at the service today.. thanks for your comment, your input is most welcome.
